Students desperately need help using real world examples to estimate various things! For example, they look at a stack of pennies and you ask them how many pennies are in the stack. Students struggle with this line of thinking. We teach them to find one correct answer and then when they get to the higher maths they are asked to find a range of answers. So I've created this resource to help start to build their thinking at a young age. Plus they think its just a fun activity with a chance to earn a reward, they don't even realizing they are strengthening this skill.
When you first look at this product, I am categorizing everything to be able to pick estimations related to what we are currently doing (weight, length/height, counting objects, capacity, and more). I am also creating a file strictly related to themes taught throughout the year.
It is still a work in progress because I am taking all of my own pictures. As I add more throughout the summer and the school year I will be increasing the price. I have also included just a short summary as to how I plan on using this resource throughout the year with my current first graders (titled "Introduction"). I have used something similar to this for fourth grade and included that instruction as well.
I had considered setting a time line for completion dates on this resources but that would stress me out. Plus I am not finishing one topic at a time, I am working on all of them at the same time. I may be walking through a store and find something that would work in both capacity and numbers. Plus inspiration could come at any moment. My goal is to have enough pictures in each of the topics to be able to start the school year successfully. I will not update it every time I upload new pictures, that would not be fair to everyone. I will try and update it bi-weekly or monthly and highlight the new updates here!
I am open to suggestions as to what items to show in the pictures. Please contact me with any questions, concerns, ideas and suggestions.
