***********************************

Estrella de Semana (EdS) is an interactive comprehensible input (CI) bellringer activity that I use in my class. I grew very tired of hassling my students to get out their binders, get out their bellringer sheet, get out their pencils, look at the board, etc. etc. Now, the first 5-7 minutes are reserved for the EdS questions!

Take one class period to have students answer the EdS on the back of the sheet. Encourage creativity! (i.e. “pollo” as a favorite food is outlawed!) Any spare time left over when all students have completed can be used to do some quick conversation swaps between students (students pick different partners to ask different questions, listen and write down their answers). Take up EdS sheets at the end of class and organize them by period.

Next, select a volunteer to be the EdS and a Googler. The EdS and Googler will pass out the EdS sheets as they enter the class. The EdS will sit at the front of the class while the Googler will prepare a slide for the EdS. Divide the questions equally throughout the week. Take volunteers from the class to ask one of the assigned questions. Once the EdS answers, the Googler finds an appropriate Google image to put on their respective slide. The student that asked the question then addresses the class and reinforces the EdS's response in the 3rd person.

After the questions have been answered by the EdS and reinforced by the asker, it’s time to CIRCLE (circling is a CI/TPRS strategy)! Using the Google images on the slide, I circle the vocab I am trying to drill from the EdS question. Again, I’m not as worried about the EdS answer as much as the repetition of the targeted structure/word from the question itself.

After each day, we review/circle that day’s answers and previous answers through the Google image slide. At the end of the week, we take a quick listening quiz on the EdS for a grade. Next week is another student’s turn to be EdS with brand new answers but still reinforcing the same structures. Each EdS sheet usually lasts for about 4-5 weeks/4-5 different EdS students. Comment with any questions!
