"In what way are the labour practices of modern corporations ethical?"
This is an inquiry project that links 19th century labour practices to modern ones, and asks students to be aware of how the things they buy are made so they can make informed purchasing decisions.
In this package you will find the project outline, rubrics, resource list for students, and an introductory lesson/webquest. This unit takes me around two months.
- You must first front load the industrial revolution, focusing on mass production and the resulting work conditions and child labour. Each class I began with a current event relating to labour.
- I used the school's digital dashboard to collaborate with my students while they did their research. They were able to write reflections, and ask questions, and I could help them either in real time or during that same day. I had the school librarian help my students as well using the same digital platform. Research will mostly be done online or by contacting companies directly.
- Students MUST have already been taught how to research and what makes a reliable source in a previous unit as there is no time to teach this skill during this project.
