Let's celebrate student diversity! Send this hands-on and engaging project home for students to explore their ethnic origin by researching their ancestral background and at least two customs and traditions related to their family or country (-ies) of origin. Students will use their research to create a picture book or poster to present to the class.
I gave my 2nd graders about two weeks to complete this project at home and was "wowed" by their knowledge and hard work. This project was in conjunction with our Social Studies unit on Diversity and helped them understand how America is a "melting pot".
This project includes a letter home, student checklist, helpful vocabulary, rubric, and 2nd grade student samples.
This project is aligned with Virginia's 2nd Grade Social Studies SOL 2.12b understand that people have diverse ethnic origins, customs, and traditions, make contributions to their community, and are united as Americans by common principles and Language Arts SOL 2.3 use oral communication skills.
