This inquiry lab is designed for students to take herbs, spices or other natural plants and put them to the test as an antiseptic. Ethnobotany is a hot topic, and this lab provides an outstanding student experience to be able to determine the efficacy of plants on pathogens. Feel free to take it to the next level by having students research societies that first used their ingredient or optimally use it, etc.
This resource includes a Slides presentation to introduce the topic. All slides have unique backgrounds with healing plants. Herbarium specimens and several photos taken by me at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Kauai as part of the STEP (Science Teacher's Enrichment Program) are included. This was one of the very best professional development sessions I have attended. The resources, especially our instructor and their staff, were world class. This was my first foray into botany, and I have gained an appreciation for this enormous part of the living world.
