PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Introduce and Practice Ethos, Pathos and Logos

This resource is a complete lesson plan with all student materials for introducing and practicing defining ethos, pathos and logos and identifying the use of each in sample texts. This resource for teaching ethos, pathos and logos directly supports CCSS Anchor Standard R2 (determine central idea and analyze how it is developed in a text).
This lesson on ethos, pathos and logos is a non-editable, compressed ZIP file that contains PDFs of the following:
1. Teacher Directions for each part of the lesson
2. A student handout with:
a. A Do Now activity that encourages students to think about how they might use persuasion in two different scenarios.
b. A chart to fill out as students watch two videos (linked in the teacher directions PDF), one that gives an overview of ethos, pathos and logos and one that explains the use of ethos, pathos and logos in three different scenarios on the same topic. Though these videos, students learn the following: what are ethos, pathos and logos, what does each sound like or look like, and how and why is each one used.
c. A chart that requires students to sort characteristics dealing with ethos, pathos and logos into the appropriate category.
d. Two short, original texts with corresponding multiple choice questions where students identify ethos, pathos and logos.
e. A multiple choice exit ticket, based on an original text.
3. An answer key for all parts of the lesson.

This resource is designed with middle school students in mind, but could be used in 9th grade as well. It is designed for a 90-minute class period. For a shorter class, split the lesson into two parts.
