From there, your students divide themselves into small teams to begin their apprenticeships in each of four American cities -- working to earn their stripes and become Washington's right hand man under the close watch of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Paine.

The Apprentice: Revolutionaries turns a week-long study of the writings of the Founding Fathers into an asynchronous, team-based exploration of primary source documents, historical characters, and rhetorical strategies. Learning feels like a living, breathing, class-wide video game as students will work in four competing teams representing noteworthy cities from the thirteen colonies (Philadelphia, Richmond, Boston, New York) in an effort to level up their rhetorical abilities and earn “Master Craftsman” ranks under each of four Founding Fathers as they master the basic elements of ethos, pathos, logos, and poetic style. Best of all: no fancy apps or expensive tools needed! If your classes have a QR reader (or any web-ready device), you're on your way to revolution!

Level Up Learning

The activity presents student teams with a series of four activity tracks, with a stepping stone series of three increasingly challenging work products to be completed for each Founding Father to review. Student teams may work on any Founding Father’s track at a time – progressing through the stepping stone stations while earning their “Apprentice,” “Journeyman,” and “Master Craftsman” ranks with strategically placed teacher checkpoints at every turn to make sure that everyone is playing fair as they go!

The modular activity centers included in this resource allow teachers the ability to check in regularly with student groups as they "level up" their rhetorical abilities in each of four activity tracks. The game-based scoring system that the resource provides helps introduce a sense of friendly competition and time-bound urgency to your activity while preventing runaway victories for any one team. Likewise, the activity's repeated opportunities for various work product review at strategic checkpoints cultivates an atmosphere of growth mindset with student groups as they recognize that improvement is possible with each new stage of the game.

Spies and Scandals
The American Revolution was full of spies, turncoats, and secret alliances. Teachers wishing to include an added layer of intrigue, strategy, and background knowledge-building to this activity can even consider including a resource directing teams to an optional scripted online interaction with the character of Maria Reynolds, the infamous paramour of Alexander Hamilton.

Self-Guided Checkpoints and Bonus Levels
Centers activities are no fun if groups are forced to move though their stages at the exact same pace as their rivals. Traditional centers leave some groups racing to finish while others stare blankly at the ceiling tiles waiting for their chance to proceed to the next rotation.
