Students use persuasion / arguments and the rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) in three paragraphs written to three different audiences. Students write with Rhetoric in mind. This Core Curriculum aligned assignment requires students to write for audience and purpose.
Grading is easy with the included grading rubric.
In this writing assignment students have choice. Students are presented with six situations to consider. Students pick three of the situations. For each given situation, students write a paragraph, for a total of three paragraphs. Each paragraph is required to contain ALL THREE appeals.
But, students are given a little help with the 'Helpful Hints'. These hints gives students ideas of how to use ethos, pathos, and logos in their writing.
Included is a rubric to making grading easier for you too. For this rubric all you have to do is check or circle the box that represents each student’s performance. Each level of performance already has comments and a percentage range. Then put his/her final grade at the bottom. You can make it worth any amount of points or a letter grade.
Use as a practice assignment or as an assessment.
Print the handout and rubric separately or print them double-sided. If you print them double-sided then not only can the students view the expectations, but they can also staple the rubric to their work for even more convenient feedback and grading.
I hope this product adds to your unit/lesson on Ethos, Pathos, Logos.
