Product Description

While most students have studied Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, "The Other America" is a speech by MLK, Jr. the majority of students have never heard. The speech is about economic injustice and the role race plays in the socioeconomic status of individuals in the U.S. Though this speech was delivered over 50 years ago, it remains powerfully and incredibly relevant today.

In this activity, students will begin by reviewing ethos, pathos, and logos. A handout is provided that defines all three terms and includes examples of each. Students will then watch Martin Luther King, Jr. deliver some of "The Other America" at Stanford University in 1967. Next, students will identify examples of ethos, pathos, and logos that are present in the speech. They will also be asked to explain the persuasive argument of the speech.

This resource includes the following:

  • Handout on ethos, pathos, and logos
