This is a tabular graphic organizer that is structured such that the stages of protein synthesis (e.g. transcription, RNA processing, etc.) are row headings and molecular categories (e.g. DNA, RNA, etc.) are column headings. Students are provided a list of terms related to the eukaryotic regulation of gene expression, including general terms (e.g. RNA polymerase, chromatin) and more advanced terms (e.g. heterochromatin, enhancer). Students organize each term according to its molecular structure and relevant stage of gene expression. There may be more than one right placement and students should be encouraged to collaborate and debate proper placements. Some terms refer to processes, not structures, and are provided a separate column in the table. This activity emphasizes the structure/function relationship and helps students think about the vocabulary with greater clarity. May also be used an an effective formative assessment tool if completed in class.
