European Exploration, Colonization, and its Lasting Effects
This PowerPoint is broken into FOUR separate sections:
1. The reasons why Europeans wanted to explore.
2. The accomplishments of early explorers:
*Prince Henry, Bartholomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan
*Brief mention of Hernando de Soto, Francisco Coronado, Francisco Pizarro, and Ponce de Leon
3. The goals of colonization in North America by Spain, France, and England.
*Brief background of these warring nations in history and how conflicts continued in North America
*Early settlements of Spain and France
*Statements of the origins of the Thirteen Colonies
4. The lasting effects of the influences of Spain, France, and England with regards to:
Each portion could be utilized during four different lessons, if wanted.
At the end of each section, a brief "Checkpoint Time" is given. A few questions are asked that relate to the information presented in the section. Students can either write down or orally give answers to the teacher.
(My students always enjoy being active participants while learning from a PowerPoint… and yes, the answers are even presented in the slides. )
