Using the ACAPS (author, context, audience, purpose, significance) formula of analyzing primary sources, this lesson is geared toward introducing a European Exploration unit and making it relevant to students today. I've taken a speech by President Obama at a NASA event and changed only 6 words/phrases to make it seem like it could have been said by a Spanish king over 500 years ago. The message is the same: Exploration can lead to growth and power.
Included in this attachment are both the ACAPS handout with Obama's speech and my changes. It also includes a sheet that has the two together to clearly show the changes made.
