Talk Show: The Age of Exploration

Your students will work in groups of four to plan and present the talk show. The student talk show will include the host and three guests. One student will represent the host and the three remaining students should each choose to represent and explorer or a native emperor. Your students will improve upon skills such as public speaking, collaboration, writing and research. The product includes an introduction, a detailed explanation of the structure of the talk show, a rubric and a list of 12 sample host questions.

Help Wanted Ad: European Explorers Needed

Your students are scribes who live in Europe during the era of European exploration. They have recently been hired to create a Help Wanted Ad to find a highly qualified and experienced person to become a European explorer. The product includes an introduction, an explanation of requirements and a rubric. 

Create Currency

Your students have been hired as Europeans artisan of the 16th century to create currency that reflects the values, culture and explorers of the Age of Exploration. The project includes a combination of writing, designs and illustrations. Classroom Debates

Debates help students improve their skills in the areas of problem solving, critical thinking, communication, teamwork and leadership. For this class activity, divide your students into six teams. Two groups will be competing against each other at a time during the classroom debate. There are a total of three debate questions so each student in your class will participate in a debate and will be an audience member for two debates. The debate questions are related to the European explorers, natives and the effects of exploration. The product includes, debate statements, strategies, structures of the debate, three planning guides, a ballot sheet for audience members and a rubric.

A European Explorer: Hero or Villain

Student will research a European explorer and then determine if he should be viewed as a villain or a hero. If students choose to complete a poster, they will include a combination of writing and original illustrations to represent the European explorer as a hero and villain. If they complete a dialogue, then they will write a detailed and interesting conversation between two people, one who views the explorer as a hero and the other who views him as a villain. The product includes an explanation and list of requirements for the poster and dialogue, a two-page note-taking and planning guide and two rubrics.

Your students are going to assume the role of an experienced and well-trained European explorer. It is the 16th century in Europe during the Age of Exploration. Exploration, Inc. is looking to hire an experienced, brave, fearless and responsible explorer. Students write a cover letter convincing the Exploration, Inc. to hire them for the position. The product includes an introduction, the Help Wanted Ad that your students respond to as a European explorer, the cover letter template (with specific directions and requirements) and a rubric.
