To show how England, Spain, and France competed for land and riches in the New World.
1 class period
This activity starts off with a story including the following sections:
• John Cabot Searches for the Northwest Passage
• Sir Walter Raleigh and the Lost Colony
• The Spanish Armada
• The Slave Trade
While reading, class members must fill in spaces with the appropriate word, term, or name from a list at the top of the first lesson page.
Next, students do a brief map exercise showing how North America was divided up between European countries competing for land and riches in the New World. This is followed by five completion questions based on the map.
The activity concludes with two Thought Questions on the lesson topic that help develop critical thinking skills.
Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment or used as a review exercise later in the school year.
