This lesson is meant to be used as guided notes for an entire class. Students begin by discussing the importance of using parenthesis when plugging in numbers for variables. (This helps address the issue of -3^2 versus (-3)^2 ) We then evaluate many algebraic expressions, with emphasis on order of operations. Then fractions, square roots, and higher exponents are introduced to give students an opportunity to master inputting these things in their calculator, if needed. Finally, we translate a word problem into an algebraic expression and use it to answer questions about earning money at McDonald’s and Burger King.
The included assignment is based off of the guided notes.
