Evaluating maps is a necessary skill for any student of geography. Students often forget that not all maps are created equal and some are more effective than others. This worksheet allows students to quickly and systematically evaluate any map used in your classroom. Students evaluate the effectiveness of the map by responding to questions regarding the purpose, elements, and type of map being evaluated. Once students get in the habit of asking themselves these questions, they can critically evaluate maps on their own as well as create their own, more effective maps. The map features are based on the TODALSIGS elements of Title, Orientation, Date, Author, Legend, Scale, Index, and Source. In case you may not want to teach your students all of these map elements, I made this file completely editable so that you may eliminate some elements as needed. This worksheet can be used as an individual, partner, or group activity as well as an assessment.
