It's imperative that students learn how to evaluate texts and formulate their own opinions, judgments, and ideas about the world around them. Sometimes the idea of doing so is much less enticing than it should be, however. To students, it sounds like work...effort? What is that!?!
This minilesson puts a fun twist on the skill of evaluating. It would be useful for any class in which the teacher wants students to learn to evaluate, or judge, the material they are reading, listening to, or watching. With this file, you will receive a PPT that includes a short lesson about what evaluating is, how to evaluate, and where students would see the skill in the real world. Additionally, it includes an activity that (I would suggest) should be completed as a whole class. Finally, student-friendly guided notes accompany the minilesson PPT.
Whether you are beginning a debate unit, working on research skills, teaching students to read critically, or preparing them for life, this evaluation minilesson should spice things up a little.
