2.OA.3.3 ~ Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.

MAFS.2.NBT.2.5 ~ Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

2.RF.3.3 ~ Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Academic Vocabulary: even, odd, digits, ones, tens, syllables

Objective/Learning Targets:
The student will be able to classify numbers and number of syllables up to 20 as even or odd while singing a favorite childhood song.
The student will be able to use place value to add numbers.
The student will be able to apply grade-level phonics to distinguishing the number of syllables in a word.

*This “triple” activity triples the exposure for your student or child to count syllables in the ones and tens, add them together using place value properties, and identifying numbers as even or odd number.

Materials Needed: Make sure you have these materials ready:

1. Make one copy of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” lyrics for each student.
2. Make two copies of the Close Reading Activity Even or Odd-O was His Syllables’ Names-O for each student. (one for before the lesson and one for after)
3. (optional) “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” song

Time Required: 20-30 minutes whole group, 15-20 minutes small group centers

Recommended Grade Range: K-5: K-1 Enrichment; 2 On Level; 3-5 Reteaching
