Everybody Needs a Rock by Byrd Baylor is an excellent book about a girl's journey to find a perfect rock. In the book, the girl describes the 10 rules to finding he perfect rock. In this ice breaker activity, students follow along as the teacher reads the book aloud. Students summarize the 10 rules for finding the perfect rock. Students then go home and choose a rock to represent them. Students will use the accompanied worksheet to draw and describe their rock. On the second day, students bring their rocks to school and describe their rock to the class before placing the rock in a jar to join the other students' rocks. "Our Class Rocks" remain on the shelf for the remainder of the year as a reminder of unity and individuality as each rock is different.
