An Intensive, Integrated Approach to Literacy In the early years, it is of utmost importance that young children are immersed in the alphabet. Literacy depends on a deep understanding of the configuration and the sounds that each letter makes. Teach the alphabet in order or randomly with a focus of a minimum of five days on each letter. Teach reading and writing assuming the students have a working knowledge of all the letters and sounds. Integrating each letter, for an extended period of time throughout the various disciplines, allows the students the time to practise and assimilate them into long term memory. It is critical that the alphabet become as AUTOMATIC as walking, eating, and blinking. This package is an accumulation from many sources, emphasizing individual letters. Activities for each letter include vocabulary, numeracy, social studies, science, games, gym activities, arts and crafts, music, poetry, cooking and literature. Use SOME or ALL of these for an extended period of time. For the other letters of the alphabet, remember to continue to revisit “Teachers Give a Hoot” often throughout the year!
