This say-mean-matter chart will help students when working with an essay that includes pulling quotes from the text.
I created this to help my students (ESL) elaborate more on what their quote means, and why it matters to the overall argument that they are making.
There are four boxes on the chart.
SAY: students put the quote from the text
MEAN: students explain in their own words what the quote means (restate)
MATTER: students explain why the quote matters for their argument or whatever type of essay is being written.
LEAD: a lead will be put in this box so students can write the whole chat in 2-3 sentences. (ex: According to the text,)
