What is Evidence, O.W.L. & Inference?
An inference is a "foundational skill" or a prerequisite strategy that helps the students (evaluate) and makes inferences (conclusions) using their higher-order skills. This skill or process helps the students prove (show evidence) their thinking during reading. This skill allows them to fill in the various information by Observing, Wondering, & Learning or “reading between the lines” from the text that the author may directly or indirectly present. The student then combines it with their background knowledge. The information may be implied or not directly stated and this complex skill will develop as the child is given the opportunity and experience to practice it. The following downloadable posters allow the child to use the charts as a reference tool to help with evidence, observing, wonder, & learning.
