This activity is an assessment lab that requires student cooperative teams to work together to provide evidence of each wave interaction reflection, refraction, diffraction, and absorption using both sound waves and light waves. This means each team needs to come up with a way to demonstrate 8 different interactions. Some may be used more than once but Ido not allow it to be used for more then 2 categories as there are many ways to achieve each. I want to students to explore rather than to just "get it done".
Each student team is provided with a clear shoe tote you can get for less than a $1 a piece that contains a lot of different materials/objects that they can use to try and produce the different wave interactions. Some include:
It is the job of the student teams to explore these items and interact them in ways that may produce one of the wave interactions. After describing what they did to achieve the interaction they also need to provide evidence for how they know they were able to produce the interaction. This is the hardest part for students as I require them to use the scientific vocabulary we have been using on class and to give those "key" features of each interaction type.
This also could be used as an assessment that is not paper pencil. A rubric can be created for what you are looking for in the evidence column.
