This is a 1200+ slide PowerPoint presentation with built-in class notes (red slides), really neat hands-on activities with instructions, fantastic visuals and examples of evolution, step by step approach to lesson delivery, questions and answers, 100 slide review game, attached lesson notes, 7 page bundled homework package, answer keys, video links, and much more.
This PowerPoint begins describing a quick overview of the unit with many interesting visuals. A quick description of the age of earth leads into a definition of evolution. This is a red slide which = very important so students should record in notebook. Some brief history of evolution is described as is John-Baptiste Lamarck's transmutation of species theory. Charles Darwin is introduced and followed by John Scopes with many neat pictures of the Monkey Trials with supportive text.
A quick summary of teaching evolution and public schools is addressed. An example of the Samurai crab is presented with text and visuals. This example shows how the crabs that look more like Samurai were favored by fisherman over non samurai looking ones. The Pinciple of Superposition is described with older more primitive fossils being found in the older (usually deeper) rock layers. A tour of species (fossils) through the age of the earth follows. Evidences of evolution are presented, chemical and anatomical similarities in species addressed, vestigial structures, whales and early amphibians are addressed in detail. Geographic distribution of related species is addressed and DNA and evidence. Evolution is then described as the change in the gene pool overtime. Notes about how Gene Pools can change is addressed, Populations can shrink, Non-random mating, Mutations in the genes, Movement in and out of the population and Adaptations to the environment that do well replace poor ones is described and reviewed throughout.
The four parts of Darwin's theories are addressed. Organisms have changed over time, Organisms Share a Common Ancestor, (Tree of Life), Change is a slow and gradual process over many generations, (Selective Breeding), Mechanism for Change was Natural Selection, The Five Mechanism's For Natural Selection - #1.) Without checks like predators, populations would increase exponentially. Survival of the fittest, (Really neat activity with Teddy Grahams that is described in PowerPoint complete with spreadsheet and directions) The Happy Bears (hands up) end up being less fit and die at the end (eaten by students), #2.) Most populations are stable in size except for seasonal changes, #3.) Natural Resources are limited. A struggle for existence, #4.) No two individuals are alike, (Neat Activity with the Peppered Moth, you will need to cut out moths from newspaper. Students wear safety goggles with a clear plastic bag stuffed into it (blur vision) and they most try and obtain moths - The camouflaged moths blend in while the dark colored moths stand out, the opposite occurs when the background changes, #5.) Variation is inheritable. (Animals pass their traits to their young).
A neat bean game simulation activity is provided with instructions and follow-up questions that has each student compete to collect GOYA beans from the grass. Another neat activity has the teacher cut-out butterflies from newspaper and white paper for a neat Peppered Moth activity. A hidden box game challenge concludes part I which has the students guess a picture beneath some boxes. Each slide removes more of the shapes blocking the picture.
The second half of this PowerPoint describes Darwin's finches and then investigates adaptive radiation in regard to a Hypotheticus beast. A story shows how over time one species can change. Variation in species is described as is convergent and divergent evolution. A neat activity has students become birds and they get four different types of beaks. Each beak is good at picking up a type of seeds. Trays of seeds (elastics, paperclips, Goya seeds, metal bb's, pieces of paper) are passed and each table member competes to fill their container. Students learn that different beak types allow certain birds a competitive advantage over others (as long as that food source is abundant.) Student partake in a neat game that has them investigate other bird structures. Each table group gets a token and needs to answer questions. If they get one wrong they lose their token (I use old cd's). An amazing photo tour of stranger species on Earth completes this PowerPoint after some more hidden box games. A 25 question PowerPoint review with answer key concludes the PowerPoint. A game template is provided. Students work in small groups using their notebook (no notebook = more difficult) Answers are provided after the quiz. This is a really neat PowerPoint that includes many meaningful activities. Unit notes are provided for students who require assistance and for support professionals. Thanks again for your interest in this PowerPoint.
