In this activity, middle school students analyze diagrams to determine evolutionary relationships, and then make their own from given data.
In Parts One and Two of this worksheet, students are familiarized with reading cladograms. Two different cladogram diagrams of animal evolutionary trees are provided, and students evaluate the diagrams to answer questions about evolutionary relationships between organisms.
In Part Three, students are required to apply what they have learned in Parts One and Two. They analyze a data chart about organism's structures, and add information to a given cladogram.
In Part Four, students are asked to independently generate a cladograom by analyzing a data chart about animal features.
