This document is designed to be used with current events from any source. I have used this document with Junior Scholastic, Up Front and other student current event publications.
Generally, I have students working in small groups on reading different articles around the room, with this document working for any/all articles being used on any particular day. This question guide focuses students attention on critical reading strategies, specifically predicting, questioning, clarifying and summarizing, before, during and after they read. This document also asks students to identify whether the article is seeking a solution or providing information, stating in-text support either way (solution based or information based).
I have used this document for 7th, 8th and 9th graders.
Once students finish working in their groups, if time allows, I have each group share out (again assuming each group had a different article). This document allows students to organize their thoughts for share out, again while reading critically.
