This is a fun project. In the Excel spreadsheet, there are 5 Harry Potter riddles. Students race to solve the riddles. They can complete the riddles quicker if they use Excel features.
Puzzle 1 - Cryptology
Students must use a key code to determine a quote and a clue that will lead them to Puzzle 2. If students use a vlookup formula they will be quicker than the rest of the class.
Puzzle 2 - Cell Names
Students use the clue from Riddle 1 and find a special cell name to collect Riddle 4.
Riddle 3 - Insert graphic
Students skip Riddle 3 if they read Riddle 2 close enough. If students do Riddle 3 they must insert a special picture into the worksheet.
Riddle 4 - Fill Handle
Students must "write lines" as punishment. Hopefully, they know about the fill handle. They also get the last clue.
Riddle 5 - Conditional Formatting
Students must use conditional formatting to find the one set of duplicate cells that lead to a message. The message must then be relayed to the teacher.
Data Validation / Message
Research (students must have access to the internet)
The last Friday of every month I have "Race Day" in my classroom. On Race Day students work with a partner and compete to see who can complete the project first - giving a set of partners bragging rights for a month. This is a great project for Race Day.
