Number sense is one of the most important foundational elements necessary to build one's mathematical and critical thinking. As educators, we need to place great emphasis on helping students develop a good understanding on how numbers behave. What many students do not realize is that there are multiple ways to represent a number, just like there are multiple ways to approach any problem in our real world.
"Exciting Expressions" encourages students to think creatively and uniquely with their number representations. You will be surprised how many expressions your students will come up with that you yourself may have never thought of! Encourage students to use all sorts of expressions, including drawings, numbers, square roots, exponents, parentheses, etc. An example is provided for you in this packet.
There are 180 days worth of Exciting Expressions in this packet, enough for each school day that goes by. Feel free to use random days or go in numerical order. These could be used as class openers, stations, wrap-ups or even homework! Either way, your students will be challenged to get a good grasp on number sense and the concept of how numbers behave.
So 'Excited" to hear about your students' "Expressions"!
