This executive functioning foundations resource helps identify and support the underlying sensory, motor, regulation, lifestyle, and environmental skills that commonly impact the development of strong executive functioning skills.

This is an executive function (EF) education and problem-solving resource designed to help you understand why EF challenges might be occurring and where to start when a child or teen is struggling. By strengthening foundations, EF develops more naturally.

The 17 Executive Function Foundations

This resource identifies 17 common areas that underpin executive functioning success, including:

  • Primitive Reflexes
  • Nervous System Regulation
  • Vestibular Processing
  • Proprioceptive Processing
  • Interoception
  • Auditory Processing
  • Visual Processing
  • Postural Control
  • Sleep and Recovery
  • Nutrition and Blood Sugar Support

What’s included

  • 17 cards, 1 for each area above- briefly explaining how it contributes to executive functioning and some common signs it may need support
  • 17 cards- 1 for each area above with checklist of suggested ways to support/ accommodate. Use these as a starting point and adapt as needed. Choose a few ideas to start with.
  • 29 common executive function challenge scenarios. Each scenario includes guidance on which foundational areas to explore first, helping adults problem-solve more effectively instead of trial-and-error.
  • This is a starter kit for anyone new to EF.
