Initiative Skill Cards: 60 cards.
Initiative is an executive function and is defined as the ability to begin a task or activity and to independently generate ideas, responses, or problem-solving strategies. Students with weaknesses in this area are easily identified because they often take an unusually long time to begin activities. When asked why they haven't started a task, they often say they don't have any ideas or can't think of anything.
The purposes of these skill cards are to challenge students to respond immediately and generate ideas quickly. Each page has four cards that can be cut apart and laminated. Each card has a time limit (one or two minutes) and a task written on it. Within the time allotted, the student must generate as many responses to the card as possible. A partner or teacher can keep time with a stopwatch and can write down responses to keep track. Teachers may even want to record the number of responses for future reference as a progress monitor.
I recommend taking a few minutes each day to run through one or two task cards in order to stimulate executive functioning development. The skill cards include writing, drawing, and speaking tasks in order to develop verbal, written, and expressive initiation.
