These 'Lecture Notes' are intended to explain Existential philosophy as it can be applied to the novel The Outsider. As well as providing an explanation of Existentialism, the Notes question the validity of the concept of Meursault as an existential absurd hero. They also contain sections on Existential Feminism as it can be related to the female characters in the novel, and a section on Postcolonial Theory as it can be related to the Arab characters.
These notes are provided as a class handout in my Grade 12 Academic English classes, they not only take the form of a study guide for the novel, they also serve as a source for essay writing.
Teachers who are teaching The Outsider, who may not wish to hand out something as complex as this, might also find the Notes helpful in guiding classroom discussions.
