Last year, I started using a self assessment tool to have my students mark where they think they are with the lessons of the day. I revamped it a little this year to go along with my community theme, but they could fit into any classroom theme nicely!
The posters display a 4 level system with 1 being the lowest level of understanding and 4 being the highest level of understanding. I use the numbered cars (squares) in this file to have them "park" under their level of understanding, but you could also use tickets, popsicle sticks, magnets, etc. with their numbers on them to have them move to where they think they are at the end of a lesson. We do a lot of talking on how to know which level they are at. The posters are in kid friendly language to make it easy for them to understand the differences.
2 posters- one with 1 and 2 levels of understanding and one with 3 and 4 levels of understanding
2 sheets of numbered cars up to 35 for each student to move under their levels of understanding after the lesson is over
