In this packet you will find a Common Core aligned question for each chapter in Kate DiCamillo's novel Because of Winn-Dixie. Use these questions during your reading block, for morning work, or during centers. The questions are based on the third grade standards, but could also be used for a high-flying second grade reading group or remedial 4th grade group.
These questions are formatted like those on the Smarter Balanced assessment. They are rigorous and require thoughtful analysis of the text. Exposing your students to the format of the SBAC questions throughout the year is a quick and easy way to prepare your kids for the new state tests!
Also included are 2 sets of DOK 3-4 questions to be used during whole class discussions, Socratic Seminar, or literature circles. Each set has a question that refers to a non-fiction article from Newsela, requiring your students to thinking deeply and analytically about the real-world connections to what they're reading. The articles are free to access, but are NOT included here due to copyright protections. A link to the articles, however, is listed in the packet to ensure that you can easily find the correct source.
There is also an answer key for the exit tickets. Because the Socratic Seminar questions are open-ended, an answer key is not provided for those questions.
