Welcome! This is an interactive group activity based on the novel, Exit West by Mohsin Hamid. I used it as a midterm for a pre-college reading class, but it can be used as a stand alone activity. Students need to have read up to chapter six.
How it works:
*Ahead of time, print out all 10 documents take the 7 (or less) country sheets (which are places referenced in the book) and place them either on a door or next to 7 different doors on your school campus.
* In class, put students into 7 (or less, depending on how many countries you want to use) groups. Each group should have at least 5 people, or you will need to double up on group roles (tasks).
*Pass out the directions to each group and read over together. Cut up the country name sheet and the group number sheet and distribute one country and number per group.
*Each group has a set of questions to research via their cell phones (or computers) and answer before they go out and try to find their respective "door" to walk through to emigrate to their chosen/given country. Once they find it, they will envision emigrating to another country as they literally walk through the door. Then they will collect the country sheet and bring it back to the classroom to turn in with their answered questions.
*Reconvene as a large group, back in the classroom, discuss with all students what they learned about the various countries and compare and contrast the experience to what Saeed and Nadia went through in Exit West as they passed through the doors to flee to different countries as refugees.
You can be creative and add more to this activity as you wish. I'm brainstorming what to add to the "door" experience as well and will let you know when it's updated. Enjoy!
