Product Description

This is a fun little activity to give if you are teaching your students about exoplanets (planets orbiting other stars). Nasa has a database of over 4,000 known exoplanets, and they have compiled them into a 3D simulation. Students can navigate through the simulation and search for planets themselves. The worksheet prompts students to pick any five planets they want, and then record the

  • Name of the star they orbit,
  • Name of the planet
  • Type of planet (gas giant or terrestrial)
  • Orbital period and eccentricity
  • Time it would take to reach the planet from Earth
  • The detection method used to find the planet (transit, wobble, etc.)

This activity depends on students having already been exposed to the above concepts (it won't teach them about them) but it serves as a nice reinforcer for the concepts, and gives students an engaging look at how vast our galaxy is and the excitement of finding other planets.
