What educators are saying

I loved this unit on exothermic and endothermic reactions. Great information and a nice mix of activities. The reading passages and the slide show were awesome and the students loved the lab!
Great comprehensive unit for middle school science. It went well with the standards and there were a variety of activities to seal the learning. Thank you!

Description

Design a Cold Pack❄️ Students will learn about exothermic and endothermic reactions in dramatic experiments in which they see the temperature quickly rise or drop. They will use this information to design a cold pack. Students will use engineering skills and the design cycle and they will construct a solution.❄️❄️❄️

✅NGSS MS PS1-6 Undertake a design project, engaging in the design cycle, to construct and/or implement a solution that meets specific design criteria and constraints test, and modify a device that either releases or absorbs thermal energy by chemical processes.*

This resource includes:

  1. an informative slide show
  2. strategic note-taking guide
  3. two lab activities
  4. a STEM engineering activity
  5. a reading passage
  6. response pages
  7. a quiz
  8. answer keys

**The materials for the labs include thermometers, hand warmers, glass jars, vinegar, baking soda, calcium chloride, ammonium chloride, and water.

The two chemicals listed can be purchased online from a science supply company. A link is included in the terms of service.

****This also includes an engineering activity to fully meet the standard for NGSS MS PS1-6. For the engineering activity, students will need some ziplock baggies, tape, foil, and other easy-to-find household materials.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSSMS-ETS1-1
Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
NGSSMS-ETS1-3
Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
NGSSMS-PS1-6
Undertake a design project to construct, test, and modify a device that either releases or absorbs thermal energy by chemical processes. Emphasis is on the design, controlling the transfer of energy to the environment, and modification of a device using factors such as type and concentration of a substance. Examples of designs could involve chemical reactions such as dissolving ammonium chloride or calcium chloride. Assessment is limited to the criteria of amount, time, and temperature of substance in testing the device.
