This folder is designed to teach state and classroom requirements for narratives using two example Expanded Moments. The shorter piece is labeled for figurative language, imagery, theme, etc. and is followed by a short writing assignment complete with peer response and revision activities.
The "Challenge"--the more in-depth work--includes all elements that comprise the framework for a "short-short, vignette, Expanded Moment" as well as a strong voice, which leads to exemplary scores. This example, too, requires that students complete assignments regarding the piece.
Many more narratives would be judged as sophisticated pieces worthy of commendable scores if the time frames were shortened. Too many students get bogged down in action that could take place over weeks or months. If, though, they would concentrate on a 5-10 (approximately)
moment, they would paint a more vivid picture for their readers.
Students enjoy this assignment because its "steps" are more manageable and can be checked at certain stages by peers and orally by the teacher to ensure that student writers stay on track.
Each folder includes instructions on many options for their use.
