Students will enjoy this game as it makes reviewing a math skill fun and competitive. Honeycomb is a version of the game "Connect Four". Partners solve different problems on the game board at the same time, and then check each other's answers using the answer key. If they get it correct, they color in a hexagon with a colored pencil or write their initials in it, some way to show what hexagon belongs to who. If they get it incorrect, they can not color in a hexagon. Partners switch who picks a problem first, and play continues until one partner has 4 in a row vertically or diagonally on the board.
Honeycomb is easy to set-up. Partners will need one game board and one answer key. Each student will need a student worksheet to show work on.
Ways to differentiate this game:
- Get 3 in a row when you have a limited amount of time.
- Have students choose the problem their partner will solve next.
- Make it a race! Students don’t have to wait for their partner to finish before starting the next problem. (Pair students with someone of the same skill level)
- Have 2 partners working as one team vs another team of 2 racing to connect 4.
