Teaching in Room 6

Make teaching expanding sentences fun and engaging with this ready to go writing resource! This classroom tested resource is a Step-by-Step approach to helping students learn to expand simple sentences into more complex and engaging writing.

What you will find in this resource is a set of three lessons that will guide your students through the process of expanding simple sentences. They will learn how to take a very basic sentence, with a subject and a predicate, and expand it into compound and complex sentences by asking questions such as who, what, when, where, why, and how. They will be guided step-by-step through the process of expanding sentences using a gradual release method where they work whole group, in pairs, and finally on their own. Students will become expert sentence expanders by the end of the lesson set.

Included in this resource:

  • Three Full standards-based lesson plan
  • All printables necessary for your students
  • Example for each set of student printables
  • Anchor chart example
  • Suggested optional extension activities

This classroom tested project is something I have used in my own classroom with great success. The students enjoyed the process of writing sentences that were more details, expanded, and outside the box. They are then able to transfer this skill to more complex writing assignments, like paragraphs and essays.

Prep is easy and painless. Everything you need to get your students writing expanded sentences is here! You can hit the ground running on day one of having this resource.
