Western Expansion and the American-Indian Wars Webquest and Video Analysis with Key - this is an 14 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 30 questions based on a Crash Course U.S. History video and the history.com website.
Students will first be asked to watch the 12 minute video: Crash Course U.S. History- Western Expansion. The video introduces the economic reasons for America to begin settling its western frontier (railways, resources, farms). The removal of Native Americans is then seen as the first required step to settling the west. The armed conflicts and the eventual destruction of Native American culture (boarding schools, reservations, killing of the buffalo) are discussed by the video. The video concludes with how the settlement of the west allowed for a massive surplus in agricultural products which today makes our modern industrial society possible, with a harsh price however. Following the video, students are sent to the history.com website which will describe and present the armed conflicts between European/American settlers and Native Americans from the Jamestown colony up to the present day.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
