Expeditionary Learning, also known as Engage NY, is an amazing curriculum that is really impacting many school systems positively. Our school system has adopted this curriculum just this year. Because I myself need visual prompts, and I know it helps my students, I have done ActivInspire flip charts. Each flip chart is labor intensive, so I felt that it could help some other teachers out there to save time by using what I've put together.
As I prepare each flip chart, I, of course, am keeping in mind the needs of my own students, so I have used some scaffolding techniques. However, I have tried to do each chart with fidelity to the lesson plans provided through EL. You may need to adjust for your own students' needs.
Unit 2 of Module 2a:
Lessons 1-8 mostly deal with comparing themes and rules to live by between three texts: Bud, Not Buddy, Steve Job's Commencement Speech, and "IF" by Rudyard Kipling.
*NOTE: I combined lessons 4 and 5 due to time constraints. Plus they went well together.
Lessons 9-14 takes step by step process of writing a literary argumentative essay by looking at a model of an essay of Steve Job's speech, studying the rubric used to score, peer critiquing, etc. All building up to Lesson 17, which is the End of the Unit Assessment.
NOTE: I skipped Lessons 15 and 16 because those are introducing Unit 3 (a unit on doing a research project) I included the lesson plans so you can still do them if you like.
Additional note: I uploaded all of Lesson 11 as a preview so you can see if it works on your laptop and if you like how I present the material.
