I tell my students that their writing is better when they add something to which the reader can relate. Usually they tell me that they don't have any ideas. Before we begin our writing unit, I have them complete this experience bank. They gather all of their experiences together and keep this paper stored so that when they need an anecdote or allusion to add to their writing, they can reference the paper. It also helps them to realize that coming up with relatable experiences is easier than they thought.
