PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In this activity, students will use their own saliva to break down starch. They will then prove that starch has been decomposed into glucose by doing a test for simple sugars using Benedict's Reagent.
Level: EASY - Junior High and High School
Teacher prep: minimal

*This laboratory activity is SOOMC (Straight Out Of My Computer). It has not been “touched up” for Teachers Pay Teachers. I offer it available for edit and at a reduced price because of this. It has been tested by my students in my classroom for several years. It works well. Note: Kids should not have eaten or chewed gum immediately prior to this activity for the experiment to work properly.

Items necessary - a hot water bath (beakers and hot plate);
thermometer (you will keep water at body temperature) ;
glass test tubes; saliva :-) ;
soluble starch - weak solution (corn starch, or powdered laundry starch will work);
pipettes or eye droppers;
Lugol's Iodine (IKI solution);
Benedict's Reagent;
water;
glass marker/ grease pencil/ or crayons;
boiling water bath, (beakers and hot plate);
safety equipment (laboratory aprons and eye protection)

Students who donated saliva should clean their own test tubes with soap and hot water- or immediately place into classroom dishwasher to clean between classes.
