Use this lesson for a completely pre-prepared and engaging lesson to help your students discover the effects of friction on movement. Walk them through the scientific method to make a hypothesis based on a question; follow a procedure (while attending to controlled and independent variables); collect, average, and analyze data; and make and support claims with evidence from their data. This experiment lesson contains engaging interaction as well as multiple opportunities for critical thinking and communication. I have included thorough lesson notes throughout to help you navigate how to best implement the lesson. I have conducted this lesson with 3rd through 6th graders including English Learners and Gifted and Talented students and have included many ideas and resources for differentiation throughout. The notes also help you avoid the pitfalls and possible misconceptions that arise--I have done the trial and error for you already. Enjoy!
