Are you looking for a fun and hands-on way to teach the different types of soils? Well, I've got a great booklet for you! This is a 10-slide PowerPoint that has some great experiments to use for students to explore the different types of soils. It covers the Georgia Performance Standard:
S3E1. Students will investigate the physical attributes of rocks and soils. c. Use observation to compare the similarities and differences of texture, particle size, and color in top soils (such as clay, loam or potting soil, and sand).
Students will get to touch the soils and even create their own edible soil replica to learn about the layers of soil! Here is what is included in the booklet:
Slide 1: Cover Page
Slide 2: Teacher Page with detailed explanations about the booklet and how to get the experiments organized and set up
Slide 3: Hypothesis Page-students will view 4 samples and make an hypothesis for what each soil is: clay, loam, silt, and sand
Slide 4: Soil Experiment-Students will use soil samples to examine grain size, grain texture, color, shape
Slide 5: Soil Experiment-Students will use water and step-by-step directions to determine which soil is Sample 1, 2, 3, and 4 using a key
Slide 6: Locate and Recall Activity with Soil Facts-could be used as a jigsaw activity where students share what they learned and covers Speaking and Listening standards too!
Slide 7: Soil Facts Graphic Organizer used with Slide 6 for students to write in what they learned
Slide 8: Rubric-Teacher can use this rubric for slides 3-7 for grading purposes
Slide 9: Layers of Soil Graphic Organizer
Slide 10: Edible Soil Activity-students use food items to model the layers of soil
I also have a couple other products at my TPT store for Soils:
-Soils, Weathering, and Erosion Assessment (the assessment goes with this material)
-Weathering and Erosion Graphic Organizers
