Help your students explain their thinking in math. This activity is framed around fifth grade math concepts of multiplying mixed numbers, dividing unit fractions and multiplying whole numbers and fractions. Students will read a sample explanation and color code the three steps:

Process: What are you doing?
Reasoning: Why are you doing it?
Vocabulary: Are you using the correct academic language?

Students are given a notebook page with these three steps and a space for examples. Also, a student hand out is included with sample explanations and a space to analyze and rewrite the explanations.
