This Explicit Phonics Assessment is used with students in a small group Reading setting. After the students have thoroughly practiced a specific phonics skill, the teacher dictates words and a sentence for the students to write. The students use the COPS method to grade their sentence and, they correct it themselves. The students also reflect on their understanding by circling how well they did on the assessment. This helps the students become self aware of their knowledge and growth. This document allows the students to effectively record what they know. This assessment helps me differentiate instruction; it clearly shows whether a student has mastered a phonics skill.
The download includes an example of the Explicit Phonics Assessment using digraphs. It also includes an answer key and teacher guide for this example. A generic Explicit Phonics Assessment is included so you can use it for any phonics skill with your students. The generic assessment is also provided in a half page format that is great for use in a student's Reading journal.
My students love doing this assessment! They have shown so much growth through this activity. It is also a great source of documentation for myself. I hope this assessment is helpful in your classroom!
