Are your students struggling to explain and describe using rich details? Do they list idea after idea in their body paragraphs without ever slowing down to explain connections? This is a resource I created to help my kiddos GO DEEP in their explanations and move to the next level on their state expository writing scores.
Using the analogy of an exploding bottle of coke, students use an example and guide to work through a sample paragraph where they "explode" shallow ideas.
I would recommend putting some statements on the whiteboard from essays that the students have already completed and having students work in groups to "explode" the ideas before using the paragraph provided. This way they can benefit from collaboratively trying out the strategy and you can use the paragraph as a formative assessment.
NOTE: The pages should be given out to students in the opposite order that they are uploaded (page 3, then 2, then 1).
