The Vikings in Canada – 2 Activities: The first activity is a set of 6 Who, What, How, Where, When, and Why short paragraphs with three accompanying True or False statements. Students, working alone, in a group, or as a class determine if the statements are true or false. This could be done through discussion only or after students complete research in books or online.
The second activity is a set of 20 questions that accompany a television documentary (an episode of Digging for the Truth) called “Voyage to America” on YouTube. This examines the historical evidence that the Vikings reached North America, with the host travelling the routes that the Vikings took in the North Atlantic. This documentary does a good job in helping students understand historical evidence in a broader sense - some historians have been slow to accept the evidence that the Vikings reached North America before Columbus did. The types of questions vary in order to elicit comprehension, inference, and opinion.
A full answer key is included, with factual information expanded on in the T/F activity to help explain the answers.
Please note that the video activity is also part of my product “The Vikings - 12 Graphic Organizers, 4 Activities” (but is not part of “The Vikings - 7 Graphic Organizers, 3 Activities”).
