Get students engaged with solving crime, researching and putting the royalty/explorers/nations on trial.
This is a one week hook for the beginning of the school year.
*Solve a Crime
-Grab their attention by having students solve a crime. Students will be given clues and will have to piece together which are important to solve the murder. Answer to the crime included.
-On that same day give student visual notes that help them draw the connections between crime solving and the work of historians.
-Included is a bonus word wall and 3 different task cards to make your wall interactive.
- Researched and cited expository essay gives a brief history of the theory and explains how it impacted nations.
-Pre-reading circle map, brainstorm, that can be added to as students read. The essay is followed with comprehension questions and answer key.
-For struggling readers visual notes lay out a plan for nations who want to be powerful and rich under the mercantilism system.
(This sets up the motivation for those in your Exploration trail.)
*Pre-trail Research-Each essay has: Pre-Reading Thinking Map, Researched and cited Essay, Comprehension Questions that start with a focus on vocabulary then move up the blooms levels, and Answer Keys for the questions. Defendants include:

The plan includes a detailed breakdown of how to group students for a history trial, along with task for each group to do and research before the trial begins and sheet for them to take notes.
Plan includes ideas on how to debrief and grade such a massive activity.
